What is IEEE?

IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization for the advancement of technology.

IEEE Xplore is a digital library providing access to the world’s highest quality technical literature in electrical engineering, computer science, electronics, and related disciplines. IEEE Xplore contains full-text documents from IEEE journals, magazines, conference proceedings, and standards, in addition to eBooks and educational courses – it contains more than 30% of the world’s technical literature.

You have access to IEEE via the Library subscription – use this authenticated link to ensure you can view all the full-text content.

What’s happening?

Library Services are very excited to welcome Julia Stockdale of Content Online, UK representatives for IEEE to Abertay on Friday 8th December for an IEEE awareness day.

Library pop-up stand

We’ll start the day off in the Library with a pop-up stand (we’ll be on Level 1, next to the cafe)  Drop past to chat to us about how you can get the most out of IEEE and pick up some FREEBIES!  Pop-up will run from around 10:30-12:30

Publishing with IEEE at Abertay

In the afternoon we’ll be in the Graduate School Seminar Room (3514.1) for a practical publishing with IEEE workshop.  The workshop will run between 14:00-15:00 and can be booked via Eventbrite – places are limited!

This practical workshop, aimed at new and early career researchers and postgrads in engineering, computing, and technology related areas, will provide an overview of publishing with the IEEE.

The workshop will cover:

• Overview of IEEE, technology areas and quality of content
• The University’s publishing activity on IEEE Xplore
• Choosing the best fit periodical or conference for your paper
• What editors look for
• Why papers may be rejected
• Paper structure
• Ethics
• Open Access options

New Library Resource: IEEE/IET Electronic Library Subscription

Library Services are VERY happy to announce that we have a new subscription to IEEE/IET Electronic Library via the IEEE Xplore platform

You will remember that we had trial access to this resource at the start of 2017 and we asked for your feedback. As a result of that trial process, a lot of hard work and negotiations we have now been able to reinstate online access!

What is IEEE/IET?

IEEE Xplore is a digital library providing access to the world’s highest quality technical literature in electrical engineering, computer science, electronics and related disciplines. IEEE Xplore contains full-text documents from IEEE journals, magazines, conference proceedings, standards, eBooks and educational courses.

What content does IEEE Xplore contain?

IEEE Xplore provides online access to more than 4 million full-text documents from some of the world’s most highly cited publications in electrical engineering, computer science and electronics.  It contains more than 30% of the world’s technical literature.

• Journals, transactions, letters, and magazines published by the IEEE and IET, with some content dating back to 1872
• Journals published by IET, IBM, BIAI, TUP, and AGU dating back to 1930
• Conference Proceedings published by IEEE, IET and VDE VERLAG dating back to 1988
• IEEE technical standards and specifications, including active, revised, archived, and draft standards dating from 1948
• eBooks published by Wiley-IEEE Press, Wiley Telecom, MIT Press, Morgan & Claypool and other IEEE entities
• Courses representing the best of IEEE conferences, workshops, and seminars in an interactive format

You’ll also find IEEE/IET Electronic Library listed on our Resources A-Z list and on relevant Subject Guides

IEEE/IET content is discoverable via LibrarySearch so you will be able to link directly to the full-text of journal articles, conference proceedings, technical standards etc. that you find in LibrarySearch using the links provided

In LibrarySearch you’ll see links in the View It tab of the Details screen (after you click the title in the result list) to:

• IEEE/IET Electronic Library (IEL)
• IEEE/IET Electronic Library (IEL) Conference Proceedings
• IEEE SERIES (IEL)
• IEEE Standards Select (IEL)

These are all part of the IEEE/IET Electronic Library (IEL) and will link out to the IEEE Xplore platform.

Mintel Food and Drink Streams Added – Market Research Resource

We’re very excited to let you know that we currently have access to 4 UK data streams in Mintel: Food, Drink, Technology, and Retail Overview

What is Mintel?

Mintel is a resource that provides consumer market research reports covering different topics or sectors of the UK market.  Market research data on Mintel includes trends, statistics, brand and company information, and sector demographic data.

We currently have access to four data streams which cover the UK only:

• Drink
• Food
• Retails Overview
• Technology

Where can I access Mintel?

Access via the A-Z Online Resources page or directly via this link

Log in using your network username and password, then scroll down and click ‘I agree’

Please note that due to the more specialised nature of Mintel content, it is not searchable via LibrarySearch.

How do I search Mintel?

You can search for keywords and phrases using the search box at the top of the home screen or browse all reports in our subscribed streams via ‘My Reports’

Type search terms into the free-text box e.g. search by category, company, industry, or sector. A suggested list of reports will display as you type your terms.

Results are ranked by date (newest first) and according to the number of times your search term(s) appear in the report or insight.

You can refine your results using the filters on the left hand side of the screen e.g. filter by date, content, sector etc.

What information can I get from a report?

Each report contains five key sections:

1. Overview – contains the definition of the report and a short summary
2. Market – contains size and performance information (i.e. sales)
3. Consumer – contains key questions asked during consumer surveys
4. Brand/Company – contains information on brand innovators and leading market shares
5. Data – contains the appendix

New Resource: CINAHL Plus with Full Text

Library Services are very excited to tell you all about our new EBSCO resource: CINAHL Plus with Full Text.  This will be a key resource for those in both SHS and SET as it covers Nursing, Mental Health and Counselling, Nutrition and Dietetics, and much more!

What is CINAHL and what does it cover?

CINAHL is the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature.

CINAHL Plus with Full Text covers a wide range of topics including nursing, biomedicine, alternative/complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied health disciplines (includig Athletic Training, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Social Service in Health Care)  This database also provides access to health care books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of practice, audiovisuals, book chapters and more.

Where can I access CINAHL?

CINAHL Plus with Full Text

Some of you would have previously had access to CINAHL when out on placement via the NHS Knowledge Network Scotland – you had to use a separate Athens username and password.  Now you don’t need to go via the Knowledge Network or have a different username and password to access CINAHL content!  Just use the link above (available via the A-Z Online Resources) and log in with your network username and password.

Features and benefits of CINAHL Plus with Full Text

• Provides an easy-to-use interface with basic and advanced search features and searchable cited references
• Subject Headings help users effectively search and retrieve information and follow the structure of the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) used by the National Library of Medicine
• Provides full text for more than 700 journals dating as far back as 1937 (note: coverage varies for each title and some current full-text content is embargoed)
• Contains nearly 4.8 million records
• Offers indexing for more than 5,000 journals
• Includes searchable cited references for more than 1,400 journals
• Includes author affiliations
• Where full-text is not available in CINAHL, you can easily check availability in other Library resources and link straight through if available (or be taken to the ILL request service)

New Resource Available and Resource of the Month February 2016: SCOPUS

It’s a two-for-one deal!  We’ve just managed to sneak it in as February’s resource of the month too 🙂

 

We’re very pleased to announce that Scopus is now available to all Abertay staff and students!

What is Scopus?

Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, features smart tools to track, analyse and visualise scholarly research.

Do you need to find the right references for an assignment, monitor a research topic or trend, identify the top researchers in a particular field or track the success of your own research? Abertay Library helps make your research pursuit easier through access to Scopus, the largest abstract and indexing database of peer-reviewed literature. Use Scopus to find and evaluate research, no matter what your area of interest.

How do I access Scopus?

Use this Link both on and off-campus to access Scopus.  You can also find it on the A-Z Online Resources page.

Both IP and Shibboleth authentication have been set up for this resource in order to make on and off-campus access easier.  This means that if you don’t use the authenticated link and go directly to www.scopus.com – you’ll still be recognised as an Abertay user on-campus (via our IP range) but would have to select Institutional/Shibboleth login when attempting to access off-campus.  We always recommend using the Library authenticated links provided so it’s best not to go direct to http://www.scopus.com

The first time you login on-campus, you will see the screen below.  Select the ‘Nesli Abertay University, Athens + Shibboleth‘ option and check the ‘Remember this organisation’ box so that you won’t see this screen next time.  Click continue and enter your network username and password:

How do I get the most out of Scopus? (User Guides and Training)

The publisher recommends following these five simple steps to get the most out of Scopus:

1. Register with Scopus to create search, citation and author alerts
2. Watch the Introduction to Scopus training video
3. Refer to the Quick Reference Guide for easy-to-follow instructions
4. Discover and follow insider tips & tricks on the Scopus blog
5. Subscribe to the Scopus newsletter 

How do I use Scopus?

• Click Search to open the Scopus search forms: Document, Author, Affiliation, and Advanced. From the Search form, you can search Scopus for specific scientific documents.
• Click Browse Sources to browse or search the indexed sources and journals by title.
• Click Compare journals to analyse and compare journals based on citation metrics such as Impact per Publication, SCImago Journal Rank and SNIP.
• Click My list to view and manage your temporary lists of documents. You can select documents and save them for later use within a session, but you can also save documents in a basket permanently.

You can view how many times an article in Summon has been cited in Scopus – look out for the ‘Cited by (Scopus) icon in the results list:

Resource of the Month November 2015: Key Note

Hello and welcome to resource of the month where we take an in-depth look at one of our Library e-resources.

This month we’ll be looking at all things Key Note!

You can access Key Note here (Key Note is not searchable via Summon so you need to access and search it directly)

What is Key Note?  Key Note provides market, company and people reports and searches its own live database of UK and Irish companies.

With Key Note you can analyse up to 10 years of company financials, spot trends, access historical data and view market performance quickly and easily.

Key Note holds information on:

• 8 million UK companies
• 200,000 Irish companies
• 450,000 unincorporated businesses

Key Note recently made some enhancements to its service including simplifying the search facility on the home page. All you need to do now is use the main large search bar in the middle of the home page and then select the product you wish to search.  Enter your search terms then select whether to search for reports, companies or people:

If you enter ‘Tesco’ and click ‘Search companies’, your results will look like this:

To view the detailed report, just click on the company of your choice (e.g. Tesco Plc) – you will then be able to see an overview, financial, ownership, people, documents, legal and peer comparison information at a glance. You will also have the options to download the full report in PDF format, export data to Excel etc.

You can also view a direct link to the holding company, where relevant on the company reports (under the Ownership tab):
