Summon linking issues – NOW RESOLVED

The issues with Summon generating error messages when trying to link out to some content earlier today, have now been resolved.

Apologies for any inconvenience this disruption to the Summon service may have caused.

Summon linking issues

We are currently experiencing issues with Summon linking out to some content.  When clicking the Full Text link from the results list, you may see a Serials Solutions User Authentication screen which states:

“We’re sorry, but we don’t recognize you as a current client of Serials Solutions. This may be due to the fact that your trial has ended or the URL was entered incorrectly. If you continue to get this error message, please contact a librarian at your institution for assistance.”

We have made some changes which should rectify this problem but are currently waiting for the build to update in order for these to take effect.  Hopefully this will be resolved today, or tomorrow at the latest.

In the meantime, you can still get to the content you have found via a Summon search – it will just take a few more steps.  From the Summon results list, you will be able to see all the details about the item: whether it is an eBook or journal article, where it is available from (e.g. Science Direct, Dawsonera etc.), the publisher, year of publication etc.  Once you’ve got the details you need, you can either go to our A-Z Online Resources or our Find a Journal search to get to the full-text item.

A-Z Online resources contains authenticated links to our databases and eBook and e-journal collections – this means that you will be prompted for your network username and password and automatically have access to all of our subscribed content. Once you’ve logged in to the resource, you can search for the item you need.  Remember, if you just search via Google, you won’t have access to our content without selecting the correct institutional login option so it is always quicker and easier to use our A-Z links or your Subject Guide pages.

Find a Journal is a tool which allows you to quickly search all of the Library’s subscribed
print and online journals by title. Use this when you are looking for a specific journal article
in a named journal.

We’re sorry for this disruption to the Summon service and any inconvenience that this may cause.  We’re working to get this resolves as soon as we can.

Problems accessing EBL eBooks from Summon using IE

There are currently issues accessing EBL eBooks when linking out from Summon using Internet Explorer both on and off-campus.

This issue is browser-specific so switching to Google Chrome (available on all university PCs) or Firefox will rectify the problem.  You won’t get an error if you have already authenticated during the current session.

If you are accessing EBL eBooks via the Library Catalogue or directly from the EBL platform, you will not encounter these error messages.

On-campus IE is generating a 500 internal server error:500error

And off-campus, IE is generating this message:

An error occurred while processing your request. Please report the details of this error to the IS Service Desk using the Incident Report Form

This service requires cookies. Please ensure that they are enabled and try your going back to your desired resource and trying to login again.

Use of your browser’s back button may cause specific errors that can be resolved by going back to your desired resource and trying to login again.

If you think you were sent here in error, please contact technical support.

If you encounter this problem, please use a different browser.  There is also a ‘Report a Problem’ option on the right- hand side of the 360 Link screen (where the red arrow is above) – please use this to send details to the Library for further investigation.

This issue has been reported to the vendor and is being worked on as a priority.  Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

If you wish to report this or any other resource problems, please email

Christmas Closing and Library Essentials

The Library will close from 5pm on Wednesday 23rd December 2015 and re-open on Tuesday 5th January 2016.

For those of you planning to do work over the holidays please remember that you can still access all of our online resources from home.

Here’s a handy rundown of the where, when and why of Library Resources:

You can access Summon and all of its content off-campus.  The functionality is exactly the same but you should use this URL and ensure you click on the blue login bar at the top of the screen (and enter your Abertay network username and password) before entering your initial search terms.

A-Z Online Resources

If you want to access specific resources, journal collections, databases etc. from off-campus always ensure you use the A-Z Online Resources or the links from your Subject Guide pages.  These links have the correct authentication built into them so you will be prompted for your network username and password and will be able to access all the full-text content we subscribe to.  If you just go direct to a resource via Google and don’t select the correct login option, you won’t be able to access Abertay content.

Google Scholar Alert: FullText@Abertay Links Temporarily Missing

We’ve been notified by ProQuest that our 360 Link links (FullText@Abertay) are currently missing from Google Scholar.  This will hopefully be restored by Wednesday 16th December 2015.

When searching Google Scholar on-campus, FullText@Abertay links will show automatically in your search results. You can add these in your settings so that they will also show when using Google Scholar off-campus.

Here’s the full details from ProQuest:

“We have traced the cause to a timing glitch with the quarterly release of our 360 products which went out last Friday.  Unfortunately the timing of this release interrupted the weekly process by which Google files are generated.  This caused files for several libraries to be “empty” at the time that Google retrieved them from us.

While the problem has been resolved on our end, unfortunately Google will only index the files on a weekly basis.  This means the problem will not be corrected for your users until next Tuesday night/Wednesday morning when the next Google cycle completes.”

Summon is still working without issue so you can link out to all of our content from there. But, if you use Google Scholar and are used to seeing articles provided by Abertay in your results, you’ll have to wait a few days for this to return to normal.
